Emergency Plumber in Newmarket: Know the Sewer-Backup Procedure
Newmarket homeowners should check the Town’s sewer-backup procedure before commissioning work they expect the Town to reimburse. Private drain service can still be requested, but contractor choice and evidence matter. Call with the address, symptoms and any Town instructions to confirm the next private step.
The contractor-choice detail that changes the decision
Newmarket’s sewer page says homeowners may use its preselected contractor or a private contractor at their own risk. It states that reimbursement is available only if the preselected contractor was used. Do not assume our private service is that contractor or that an invoice will be reimbursed.
Ask the Town to confirm the applicable arrangement before authorizing work for which you intend to seek recovery. Keep its instructions with the appointment record. A commercial service page cannot approve municipal payment.
What to report and preserve
For suspected Town-property origin, the Town requests evidence including CCTV footage, blockage location and type. It investigates and communicates its decision. Private-property blockage remains the owner’s responsibility under the published guidance.
Ask for the original video, inspected direction and a reference point for distance readings. Retain report times and the municipal reference. If a contractor cannot inspect beyond an obstruction, that limit should be stated rather than filling the gap with a presumed public-side failure.
Reduce discharge during the event
Pause taps, toilets, laundry and dishwashers when sewage is rising. Avoid contamination and keep clear of water near electrical equipment. Do not remove a backed-up cleanout cap to investigate.
The Town also calls for a sewer safety inspection before clearing work. Enbridge’s current guidance uses Ontario Dig Authority, formerly Ontario One Call, at 1-800-400-2255. Arrange that inspection before motorized or water-jet clearing of the blocked outside sewer.
A local clog and a lateral defect need different work
If one fixture is affected, ask about local drain assessment rather than starting with a sewer replacement. If several fixtures react together or clearing does not last, inspection can help identify residual deposits or a defect once visibility is suitable.
Ask whether a documented failure is isolated or widespread. Targeted repair and replacement should be compared against the actual reach, access and retained-pipe condition. A method cannot be chosen reliably from the street name or age of the neighbourhood.
A backwater valve is not a drinking-water backflow device
Newmarket distinguishes a backwater valve on drainage from a backflow preventer protecting drinking water. If flood protection is being proposed, ask which system the device serves and what happens when it closes.
Neither device is a substitute for investigating an existing blockage. A sump pump also serves a different water path. For a pump problem, review pump repair and confirm the service rather than assuming it is included in sewer clearing.
Confirm the private appointment and finished scope
Give the exact Newmarket address and any municipal direction, known cleanout and previous reports. Ask about assessment charges, video delivery, locating and equipment availability. Identify who will authorize additional work if damage is uncovered.
For permanent work, settle permits, locates and surface restoration in writing. No appointment time, municipal affiliation or local case history is established by this page. Use Aurora’s guidance instead if that municipality contains the property.
