Sewer Camera Inspection Cost: Check the Deliverables

Camera-inspection cost depends on access and the question the survey must answer. A brief look inside an accessible drain is not the same service as a recorded lateral survey with locating and a defect summary. Compare deliverables before comparing totals.

Define the purpose and route

A recurring blockage, purchase review and pre-repair survey may need different coverage. Tell the contractor what decision depends on the inspection. Ask where the camera starts, which direction it travels and the expected accessible reach.

A fee should not imply that an unreachable section will be assessed. Tight bends, unsuitable openings and obstructions can limit travel. Ask how those limitations affect the charge and recommendation.

Access and cleaning affect the job

Using a suitable exposed cleanout differs from removing a toilet or uncovering access. Confirm whether preparation, resealing and leak checks are included. Do not open a backed-up cap to prepare for the visit.

Opaque wastewater or debris may prevent useful wall footage until safe clearing is performed. Ask whether cleaning is separately quoted and how that work is approved. A camera cannot provide a meaningful interior condition record through everything blocking the view.

Recording, summary and locating are different items

Confirm whether you receive the full video, distance reference, inspected direction, defect notes and any still images. A live screen view during a visit can be useful but leaves less information for a second opinion or municipal review.

Sonde locating needs compatible equipment and surface assessment; it is not automatic with every camera. Ask how many marks or route points are included and whether depth estimates will be qualified.

Compare fees against the unresolved risk

A low-cost view of one visible crack may not establish the condition of the remaining lateral. Conversely, an elaborate survey is not necessarily needed for a simple local clog that has no recurrence or structural concern.

Use inspection timing guidance to frame the purpose. Ask what the report will distinguish and which further tests could still be needed for leakage, grade or structural questions.

Get the approval and handover terms

Clarify call-out charges, after-hours rates, cleaning, access and a possible return visit. Ask what is payable if the camera cannot complete the intended reach and who approves additional work. Include taxes and travel terms where applicable.

Retain the original file and written limitations. The inspection service guide describes a useful handover. The cheapest camera fee is not a saving if it leaves the decision-critical reach unassessed without telling you.
